Job Title: SHI - STEAM HS Specialist

Job Summary:

The objective of the STEAM Specialist is to develop and deliver Indigenous Science-based STEAM content and professional development for the Opening the Box of Traditional Ecological Knowledge: STEAM Pathways project serving high schools and institutions of higher education within the STEAM Program via the Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) Education Department. Independent judgement is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workloads. This position will be responsible for developing programming in collaboration with SE Alaska AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) chapters; co-developing SHI’s Virtual Indigenous Science Courses and summer STEAM academy content, leading the high school/higher education community of practice (CoP), and supporting the development of the Occupational Endorsement in Indigenous Science at the University of Alaska, Southeast
Duties/Responsibilities

• Recruit and support high school and higher education CoP members, AISES participants and coaches.
• Develop and deliver Indigenous Science-STEAM teacher professional development content and experiences for diverse educators and instructional coaches via the high school/higher education community of practice (CoP).
• Co-develop and deploy online and hybrid Virtual Indigenous Science courses.
• Develop community-based experiences and projects for SE AK AISES chapter students and coaches.
• Co-develop and deliver AISES and Indigenous Science content and teacher professional development for the Occupational Endorsement in Indigenous Science at the University of Alaska, Southeast.
• Assist the Senior Program Manager – Indigenous Science and Research in the development of community-based Indigenous Science-centered research opportunities.
• Support travel opportunities for STEAM high school and higher education programs.
• Participate in communities of practice and learning groups designed to increase Alaska Native student expectancy in STEAM research and teacher professional development.
• Collaborate with evaluator to ensure compliance and completion of related deliverables.
• Other duties as required

Required Skills:

• Demonstrates effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to develop culturally sustaining research and teacher professional development experiences.
• Experience with comprehensive program development and implementation
• Demonstrated ability to assist to coordinate activities with attention to detail
• Technical capacity to gather, manage, and analyze pre/post participation survey data
• Knowledge of Southeast Alaska Native culture and Southeast Alaska’s communities

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position will have no direct reports.
Work Environment
This position’s duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building and off site for programming activities. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
About this Role
This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration.
Periodic travel to partner communities in SE Alaska is required.

Required
Education and Experience:


• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or
• 4 years of professional work in project management and program coordination.
• Previous experience developing teacher professional development and/or student centered research programs.
• Experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders including Alaska Native students and families.

Salary Range: $57,000.00 - $70,000.00
