Cone Penetration Testing / High Resolution Site Characterization

Job Summary:

Gregg Drilling is seeking a skilled CPT/HRSC Operator with experience operating MIP (Membrane Interface Probe) systems. In this hands-on field role, you’ll operate advanced CPT and HRSC equipment to support environmental and geotechnical investigations across California.
We’re looking for candidates who are mechanically inclined, safety-minded, and take pride in collecting accurate, high-quality data. You’ll work closely with a dedicated crew to prepare, set up, and break down drilling sites, ensuring projects are completed safely and efficiently. This is a physically active position that involves regular bending, lifting, and climbing.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Operate CPT, MIP, HPT, and UVOST systems.
• Perform equipment setup, calibration, maintenance, and minor repairs.
• Conduct pre-trip inspections and establish control zones.
• Collect and monitor field data with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Follow all company and site-specific safety policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Have a valid driver’s license, Class A or B preferred.
• Must be willing to travel extensively and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to lift 30+ pounds throughout the day
• Ability to pass a yearly physical and random drug/alcohol tests
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including working in a team environment.
• Ability to perform physical labor, shoveling, drilling debris, and transporting materials using ergonomically correct lifting techniques
• Requires ongoing repetitive motions (including but not limited to bending and twisting, and moving within confined space throughout the work day)
• Ability to withstand long periods of standing (field work involves time on feet for work day except for breaks and lunch period)
• Ability to work daily and weekly overtime doing physical labor (up to 12 hours per day)

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED
• 2+ years environmental drilling experience with experience in MIP (Membrane Interface Probe) systems.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to indoor and outdoor weather conditions and other elements prevalent at the time. Field work often includes uneven and slippery outdoor surfaces.
Driller positions at Gregg are classified as safety-sensitive and are subject to all applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in random drug and alcohol testing, compliance with DOT physical requirements, and verification of eligibility through the DOT Clearinghouse. In accordance with these regulations, Gregg requires feedback from previous employers regarding any prior accidents, failed drug or alcohol tests, or other relevant pre-employment information related to safety-sensitive functions.
The noise level in the work environment is typical of machinery noise which can be distracting and loud at times. May be exposed to dust, and fluctuation in outside temperatures.
