Summer 2022 Natural Resources & Environmental Technician Intern

Join Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA)’s team of environmental specialists and natural resource professionals this summer! Learn about environmental stewardship, Native land management, and cultural artifact repatriation as the Natural Resources & Environmental Technician Intern. You will spend days outdoors, hiking to field sites and gaining on-the-job training in land management and water sampling techniques throughout Southeast Alaska. You will take part in the management of the tribe’s community greenhouse and garden, designed with the mission to help create food sovereignty. You will also learn about the repatriation of cultural artifacts at museums in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

This position will be based and primarily take place in-person at the Edward K. Thomas building in Juneau, AK. The intern will travel monthly to Haines, AK, for onsite water sampling projects. The intern may also travel to museums for NAGPRA consultations

Summer 2022 Indian Child Welfare Act Legal Intern

Summer 2022 Culture and History Intern

Sealaska Heritage Institute’s (SHI) mission is to perpetuate and enhance the cultures of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people, promoting cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding. As the Environmental Technician Intern, you will work alongside this team to provide groundwater and surface water monitoring and water remediation services associated with legacy contamination from past operations at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  You will spend much of the summer outdoors hiking and collaborating on projects in both hot and rainy conditions. Project opportunities include will include groundwater and surface water sampling, operation of a pump-and-treat system removing hexavalent chromium from the aquifer, well maintenance, waste management, and data management, interpretation, and reporting.
