Job Title: Environmental Outreach & Engagement Intern

Job Summary:

Join Tlingit & Haida’s team of environmental and natural resource professionals this summer! Tlingit & Haida is the largest federally recognized in Alaska, representing more than 37,000 tribal citizens. The Environmental Division supports the development and implementation of regional environmental and natural resource programs that advocate for community resilience. The Environmental team works across several fields, including horticulture and cultivated foods, land revitalization and solid waste management, harmful algal bloom and paralytic shellfish toxin monitoring, landslides and extreme weather monitoring, and transboundary water quality monitoring. As part of our team, you’ll learn about tribal environmental programming that integrates Western ways of knowing and Indigenous science to steward the lands, waters, and traditional resources of the Tlingit and Haida people.
As an Environmental Outreach & Engagement Intern, your focus will be on outreach and engagement initiatives, but you’ll also have opportunities to get involved in fieldwork and further develop your own personal connection to the lands, waters, and resources that will be at the center of your project(s). Throughout the summer, you’ll have the opportunity to work across several Environmental programs and assist with various outreach, education, and community engagement needs. The project(s) you work on during your internship can be flexible to align with your interests.
This internship will take place in-person in Juneau, Alaska

Duties/Responsibilities:

Potential Projects:

• Develop a recycling and composting educational campaign that explains what can and cannot be composted or recycled.
• Develop a more robust plan for communicating results from the harmful algal bloom and paralytic shellfish toxin testing program, which could include community outreach and data reports.
• Assist with communication needs for horticultural programming, which may include community engagement during the development process of a community orchard and food forest.
• Assist with the organization and planning of Tlingit & Haida’s annual Southeast Tribal Environmental Forum, including new Indigenous knowledge sharing opportunities that will be intertwined with the event.

Field Work:

• Participate in a beach clean-up event that will be held after the 4th of July
• Collect phytoplankton and ocean acidification samples once a week
• Gather shellfish once a week for paralytic shellfish toxin monitoring
• Assist with two shellfish biomass surveys that will model clam population density and distribution
• Assist with composting processes as needed, which may include handling food waste and adding it to a composting machine

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Interest in the field(s) of horticulture, organic and recyclable waste management, coastal ecology, natural resources, or environmental science
• Interest in community engagement, education, and outreach
• Self-starter with ability to work independently and collaborate with a team
• Willing and able to work outdoors in inclement weather and on challenging terrain
• Flexibility to work outside of normal work hours, as needed
• Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
• Legally authorized to work in the United States

Education and Experience:

• Must be age 18 at time of hire
• Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
• Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with graphic arts, creating digital media, and/or social media.
• Experience with Microsoft Suite software, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong critical thinking abilities.
• To drive company vehicles, applicants would need to have a valid driver’s license and be at least 21 years old.
• At least a 2.5 GPA

Physical Demands:

• Field work may require bending, kneeling, squatting, or standing for extended periods of time
• May need to hike short distances on unstable surfaces and challenging terrain.
• Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 25 pounds regularly.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee will work in an office setting and outdoors. Business-casual attire is required for office workdays.
• The employee should expect to assist with light fieldwork at least once a week. This includes work on unstable surfaces and in potential inclement weather. Jeans, work-appropriate athletic wear, and other casual attire are allowed on days when performing field work. Appropriate outerwear for performing field work in Southeast Alaska is required, including a rain jacket and tall rain boots. Rain pants are highly recommended
• Travel is not guaranteed, but there may be opportunities for work travel
• The employee will need to provide their own transportation to/from work. A personal vehicle is not required because there is access to public transportation, but the employee may find it useful
